Jim Grandy

Jim graduated from Boise State University in 1981 and attended Whittier College School of Law receiving his JD degree in 1985. He was admitted to practice law in 1986. He started his insurance defense career during law school at Hill, Genson, Even, Crandall & Wade and became an Associate in 1986. While in his second year of practice he sat second chair with Peter J. Gates who defended the famous Anaheim fire case. The trial lasted several months, resulting in a defense verdict. Jim worked directly under Pete Gates and the Hon. James Crandall (retired) while with their firm and gained invaluable litigation and trial experience.

After four years as an Associate and Senior Associate, Jim and Doug founded Cullins & Grandy LLP in 1990 and the firm has continued to grow over the ensuing years. His daughter, Allison Grandy, is now a partner with the firm and is an accomplished trial attorney. Jim has also had the great pleasure of practicing law with his brother Russell for the past 30 years and his wife Bonnie Dohrmann who joined the firm 20 years ago after working 15 years as an Orange County Deputy Public Defender.

In the 1990s, Jim sat as an Arbitrator for the Orange County Superior Court nonbinding arbitration program and as judge pro tem for settlements.

In 2004, Jim was invited by the late Judge Douglas Weathers to join the American Board of Trial Advocates Riverside/San Bernardino chapter where he became a Life Fellow. A few years later he transferred to the Orange County chapter. Through ABOTA, Jim has developed lifelong friendships with some of the finest attorneys in the country.

In 2006, Jim was asked by Concordia University Irvine to develop and teach their first business law class for the MBA students. Jim created and taught Essential Business Law as an Adjunct Professor for the next 10 years through 2016. The same class is still offered at the university.
